Mann completes Beant Singh statue by placing Dilawar's placard, says next time it will be broken
WSN Network

Jalandhar: If you celebrate a gross violator of human rights and someone who let the so-called 'Dirty Harrys' decide their own law -- kill the innocents if you can't catch the culprits -- then what do you expect the victims and the community to do? Most certainly, it will not queue up to garland the statues of such people.

Activists of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) led by its president Simranjit Singh Mann and former militant leader Wassan Singh Zaffarwal on Monday registered a strong protest against installation of a statue of former Chief Minister Beant Singh by hanging placards bearing photos of Dilawar Singh — the human bomb who killed Beant Singh — around the neck of statue at BMC Chowk, Jalandhar.

The SAD leaders and activists had gathered at Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Model Town, where they held a meeting. Mann had been opposing the installation of the statue of Beant Singh, arguing that he was involved in the “butchering” of thousands of Sikh youths and installing his statues was an insult to Sikhs. They started from the Gurdwara giving an impression that they would stage a dharna at BMC chowk. However, when they reached BMC chowk they came out with the placards bearing photos of Dilawar Singh. These placards were hung around the neck of the statue by Mann and others along with the raising of slogans like “Dilawar Singh Zindabad”. Police reached the spot and Mann, Zaffarwal and 19 of their supporters were arrested and taken to police station Sadar and they were booked under section 107/151 of CrPC.

“A statue of Beant Singh would not be tolerated here, next time we shall break it”, he said. Mann was produced before SDM (I) Bhupinder Singh in the evening and where Mann and others refused to take bail.

The WSN had earlier repeatedly warned about the negative vibes generated by installation of statues of such personalities as Beant Singh. But not only had leaders of Congress like Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Shamsher Singh Dullo unveiled the statue but another statue of Beant Singh has been installed at the Congress state headquarters in Chandigarh. Statues of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi have also been installed there.
