Inderjit Singh Reyat bailed in
Kanishka case
WSN Bureau
VANCOUVER: Inderjit
Singh Reyat, who has served over two decades in prison for his
purported role in the Kanishka case was granted bail today by the
British Columbia Court of Appeal, informed his lawyer Ian Donaldson.
As such, he has
served his sentence but is awaiting trial for perjury for his
testimony.
As the Crown did
not appeal to the Supreme Court, he was released from the Lower
Mainland prison in British Columbia.
Posting a $
500,000 surety for his bail, his family including his wife and
brother was there to welcome him on his release. may be released
soon from jail but under stringent bail conditions.
Reyat
was convicted of two counts of manslaughter on the basis of his
guilt plea. He also faces charges of perjury related to accusations
that he lied during his testimony at the trial of Ripudaman Singh
Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri, who were acquitted of murder in the
bombings. The trial on the conspiracy charges is set for January
2009.
Interestingly, the BC Court of Appeal has asked all media to present
their logic for obtaining a copy of the bail conditions and it has
been ruled by the court that before releasing the documents, it will
hear the lawyers of the two sides.
The
conditions are strict, but they will be kept secret under a
publication ban until the judge decides otherwise, said B. C.
Attorney General Wally Oppal.
