UK Journalist union raises
concerns over 1984 massacre
WSN Network
Southport(UK):
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has voted in their annual
conference to support the fight for justice for the victims of the
Sikh massacre 25 years ago. At least 3,000 Sikhs were killed
throughout
India
in a four day organised pogrom.
The Annual
Delegate Meeting (ADM) passed motion 147 which was proposed by
Parvinder Singh, NUJ Book Branch:
"This ADM notes
the anti-Sikh massacres that took place in November 1984 throughout
India, following the assassination of the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs
Indira Gandhi.
• ADM is alarmed
that 25 years on, none of the key perpetrators have been brought to
justice.
• ADM calls upon
the delegates to study the report ‘1984 Sikhs’ Kristallnacht’ which
documents the events from a wide range of sources.
• This ADM
instructs the General Secretary to write to the Secretary of State
for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs urging the British Government
to raise this matter with the Indian High Commissioner."
Jeremy Dear, NUJ
General Secretary has added his support for the campaign, adding:
‘It is important for all peoples that we seek not just the truth
about the events of 1984 and beyond, but that we also act for
justice.’
As per the
motion, it was decided to urge the British Government to raise
1984’s anti-Sikh massacres with the Indian High Commissioner. It
said NUJ is on the side of the widows in pursuit for justice and
it’s high time that the Indian Government come clean.
