Scamsters defraud customers in
the name of Dish Network
WSN Network
FREMONT:
The Amritsar Times Media Group has unearthed a scam in which a large
number of people were being duped of thousands of dollars under the
name of Dish Network even as Dish Network had no knowledge of the
scandal. The rogues lured people by saying that if they paid $600 in
cash, they will get Dish Network's services for two years without
any further payment. This money was being received via Western Union
and was being encashed in Lahore-Pakistan. People were getting a
package worth $200 with such a scheme and they would think that at a
rate of approximately $25 a month, the package sounded like a good
deal.
The channels of
the Dish Network would start functioning from the very next day and
no one doubted anything initially.
But the
scamsters seemed to be smart, and one needs to be careful to escape
their clutches. What really happened was that the money was not
going to Dish Network but to some individual (e.g. M. Bilal). The
customer would be told to call up Dish Network and inquire about any
pending dues. He would of course receive information that there was
nothing pending against his name.
When the
Amritsar Times Media team probed the matter, it was found that the
fraudsters were making payments to Dish Network with stolen credit
cards. The owner of the card would notice the discrepancy only after
a month or two and would call up Dish Network which used to return
the money to the card holder and instead bill the customer, a usual
business practice. Thus, the customer was a victim of double whammy.
Amritsar Times
team spoke to more than 15 affected customers in different cities
like Yuba City, LA, Bakersfield, Fremont, Selma etc. The extent of
the fraudster’s activity is likely to be much larger.
Dish Network's
Dave Hernandez has now told Amritsar Times Media that no customer
should send any money to anyone except in the name of Dish Network.
He said if any customer has paid money to any such individual, he or
she should contact Dish Network's Dispute Resolution line at phone
720.514.8555 ext 80531.
For the
information of the readers, the fraudsters operate through phone
numbers 845.704.1155 and 434.322.4454.
Customers are
also welcome to call Satnam Singh Khalsa of Amritsar Times at
510.706.1300 so that Dish Network can be approached for some kind of
concession.
