FARIDKOT: After
the ruling Akali Dal and the opposition Congress accused each other
of double standards over nuclear plant in Punjab, here comes a new
offer. Now, the non-resident Punjabis have offered to construct a
nuclear plant in Punjab.
"If the Punjab
government provides a conducive atmosphere, NRIs (non-resident
Indians) can initiate the building of a nuclear plant in the state,"
said IndianAmerican millionaire Sant Singh Chatwal during a
felicitation function hosted by the management of Bhai Pheruman
Education Society.
Chatwal, an
alumnus of the local Khalsa School being run by the society, visited
the city after 40 years.
Muktsar Deputy
Commissioner Verun Roozam and former Faridkot MLA Kushaldeep Singh
Dhillon were among those present on the occasion. Lauding the
Indo-US nuclear deal, Chatwal said he had sponsored the United
States Congress delegation for promoting friendly relations between
the two countries.
He said the
retarded industrial growth in Punjab was discouraging NRIs from
venturing to invest here.
Chatwal laid the
foundation stone of a girls hostel, in memory of his late father
Makhan Singh Chatwal and his mother, to be completed in a year.
Apart from
giving a grant of Rs 2 crore for the hostel, he assured to provide
financial aid for development works in the city. He also gave away
medals and awards to meritorious students of the dental college.
