Congressmen declare their liquor status as Not Guilty
WSN Network

CHANDIGARH: Even though it is a routine procedure and happens all the time all across the country, the fact that it happens at all must be taken notice of. Political parties draft their Constitutions with many norms and ideals in mind but the practice is to observe the norms only as an exception. Violation is the norm.

The Congress Constitution not just makes it essential for a aprty member not to drink but also wants him to give it in writing that he abstains from liquor. With no other way out, many in Punjab and elsewhere fill up the perfunctory form even though they are regular consumers of the prohibited fluid stuff.

The Rs-3 application form for membership of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee — submitted by all new members and those who have renewed their membership in 2009 — contains the declaration: “Main sharaab jaan kise hor nashe da sewan nahin karda”.

Translated from the Punjabi: “I do not consume alcohol or any other intoxicant.”

Of course, everyone knows it is a sham, but there are varying opinions on whether the clause should be dropped altogether. Many old timers say that clause must not be dropped as shaming a culprit is better than telling him that he is now acceptable.
