Sans BJP, Akali Dal will be on test in Delhi polls
WSN Network

NEW DELHI: Punjab's ruling Akali Dal will be soon on test in India's capital Delhi as the country's Election Commission announced that the Assembly polls there will be take place on November 29. The Akali Dal is planning to fight the election alone, instead of a tie up with its Punjab alliance partner BJP. The Election Commission also announced dates for elections in four other states, Rajasthan (December 4), Madhya Pradesh (November 25), Mizoram (November 29) and the Naxalitehit Chattisgarh (Nov 14 and Dec 4). Counting of votes in all the states will be taken up on December 8.

Badals want better standing against Sarnas

The Election Commission refrained from taking a decision on polls in Jammu and Kashmir reportedly because of difference of opinion among the three members of the commission. Akali Dal is a part of the BJPled NDA but is trying to find a better foothold in Delhi where the Sarna brothers in league with the Congress have been becoming strong and persistently challenge the might of the Parkash Singh Badal-led group.

The contests for the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) have repeatedly proved that the Badals need to do things in a better and different way to win over the Sikhs of Delhi. The Sarna led DSGMC has ften made Punjab's ruling Akali Dal look helpless on matters like separate SGPC for Haryana.

Sarnas also have a livewire link with former CM Amarinder Singh, the bete noire of the Badals. Some political experts said as the election date has been announced, the Akali Dal may well go back on its decision to fight Delhi polls separately and may hammer out a formula with the BJP again. Akali Dal has often faced criticism for an alliance with a party largely perceived asmothering the Hate Minorities agenda.
