India’s minority panel says
scrap the blacklist
WSN Network
NEW DELHI:
This is
one demand that echoes every few weeks but then fades away from
limelight even though everyone agrees that it is a genuine measure
and much needed in times of bitter divisiveness. Now, once again
emphasizing the need to connect NRI Sikhs to the mainstream of the
country, the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has asked for
a review of the cases lodged against the community members settled
abroad. These migrants were blacklisted for supporting extremist
groups in the eighties during the terrorism period in
Punjab.
Now the
Commission wants the so-called Blacklist of the Central government
to be thrown into the dustbin.
The Commission
adopted the report submitted by NCM member Harcharan Singh Josh last
month and has already sent it to the Centre for action. Josh
submitted the recommendations after a visit to London in August. He
had gone there to participate in Independence Day celebrations
organized by the Southwark Hindu Centre of London.
The Commission
said that "their cases should be reviewed favorably on individual
basis if their antecedents are good and they are not involved in any
anti-national activities." The Commission arrived at the findings
after holding meetings with the Sikh community members at different
places in the UK.
