kids friend Takuya

SANTA CLARA:
A
Cupertino resident Jessi Kaur has addressed many concerns of young
children regarding Sikhism by writing a book children's book, "Dear
Takuya ... Letters of a Sikh Boy," that shares a series of 16
fictitious letters sent by an 8-year old American Sikh boy named
Simar to his Japanese pen-pal.
The book is
aimed at disseminating a positive message of tolerance without being
preachy. To find a unique tone, Kaur decided to use the epistolary
format for the 49-page book. The letter format helps in lending the
personal touch. The book devolves on some of the basic facts of Sikh
religion, history and culture. Experts think the book will come in
handy for many parents and children at a time when school kids are
reporting incidents of harassment due to the unique Sikh identity.
The book has
beautiful illustrations by Brian Johnston and is edited by Manjyot
Kaur.
Kaur is the
co-founder of the International Institute of Gurmat Studies in
Tustin. and is also the
vice chair of the Cupertino Fine Arts Commission.
