On the same-same debate
WSN Bureau
This is a
complex debate, and it always was. There is a strong body of
arguments by those working to prevent HIV/AIDS, and there are strong
moral grounds from the religious right. But strutting around after a
Delhi High Court judgment, the way some same sex organisations have
celebrated the event, and the way the Indian media and the so-called
liberal domain has hyped the issue not only obfuscates the many
layers of the debate but has also negated the struggle of many
minorities in India.
As we said, the
religious right has opposed the hype. The Catholic church has taken
a very reasonable position by saying that it not only does not allow
discrimination, it rather welcomes the same-sex relationship people
with respect and compassion, but it does not approve of it, and will
continue to rectify what it calls the factors that lead to it.
The Akal Takht
jathedar has already spoken out, and has asked the Sikhs to stay
away from such practices. He has not said what would he have to say
to those currently in such relationships. He has not addressed the
issue posed by the liberal domain. One does wish that the statement
from the temporal seat of the Sikhs should have been more argued,
more nuanced and more layered.
We can learn
lessons from the Catholic church in this episode.
Also, one
wonders why is there always so much hurry in rushing to the media.
