Namaz v/s puja clashes in India
leave four dead
WSN Network
MURSHIDABAD:
Four persons were killed, including two in police firing, as
communal clashes broke out on Friday at a village in Beldanga in
Murshidabad district. Several people were missing after the clash
and about 15 houses and 20 shops were set on fire by rampaging mobs.
Curfew had to be imposed in the area.
The incident
came just before India's Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's
scheduled visit here on Sunday. Tension has been brewing in Jhaubona
high school in Beldanga between Hindus and Muslims over holding of
namaz and Saraswati puja on the premises. About a year ago, Muslim
students objected to Saraswati puja being held in the school and it
had to be abandoned. Similarly, a long-standing demand from the
Muslim community to allow students to hold namaz on the school
premises was being blocked by Hindus.
