AMRITSAR:
The acclaimed US-based Israeli born architect Moshe Safdie, who
worked on the prestigious Khalsa Heritage Centre at Anandpur Sahib,
would undertake beautification of the surroundings of Harmandar
Sahib along with the corridor project (Galiara) at Amritsar. A
decision to this effect has been taken by Chief Minister Parkash
Singh Badal after a meeting with a delegation of architects led by
Safdie in Chandigarh.
Safdie is now
all set to make a presentation on the concept and layout plan to
undertake beautification of the surroundings of Harmandar Sahib from
the historic Jallianwala Bagh Complex to the holy site.
The existing
approved plan of beautification of the corridor project around
Harmandar Sahib would be an integral part of this plan.
Safdie would
also utilise the services of renowned Lebanese landscape architect
Vladimir Djurovic for planting rare species of trees and shrubs,
which would be brought from different parts of the world, to
accentuate its mystic aura and serenity.
The Chief
Minister asked Safdie to complete this project within two years and
assured that funds would be made available to accomplish this
project within the stipulated time frame.
Badal also
reviewed the progress of the Khalsa Heritage Centre and asked Safdie
to develop an additional area of 60 acres around the complex for
landscaping, to add ambience and scenic beauty to the Centre in the
foothills of the Shivalik Ranges.
Safdie assured
the Chief Minister that the KHC would be dedicated to the nation on
Baisakhi, April 13, 2010.
As for the
Galliara project, the architect would undertake the fifth and final
phase of the corridor project. Four phases of this plan started in
1988, involving the demolition of all structures in the 30-metre
periphery of the shrine followed by its beautification, have been
completed. In this fifth phase, an open plaza will be built and a
visitors’ facilitation centre constructed in the basement. Amritsar
Deputy Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu, who is also in charge of this
project, said Safdie will present the final designs of this fifth
phase by August 15 and the project is likely to be completed by end
of this year. Once this phase is complete, no vehicle will be
allowed in the area.
