Bhau, Jassa walk free after four
years as case found false

PATIALA:
Baljit Singh Bhau and Jasveer Singh Jassa, arrested in June 2005 on
the charge of giving shelter to Jagtar Singh Hawara, convicted for
the 1995 killing of then Punjab CM Beant Singh, were on Tuesday
acquitted by the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate K.S
Cheema. The court said the prosecution failed to substantiate
charges levelled in the FIR and the subsequent chargesheet presented
in court.
On June 19, 2005
a police party from CIA picked up Bhau and Jassa allegedly on
information that they had played a key role in providing shelter to
Hawara during the days after his escape from Burail Jail. A police
team from
Delhi
had eventually arrested Hawara outside the
Punjabi
University campus in Patiala.
Baljit Bhau, it
was alleged, purchased a brand new Hyundai Ascent on fake documents,
for Hawara. It was also alleged that Hawara, Bhau and Jassa used to
transport arms and ammunition in this car and that the two aides
arranged a house on rent and other household articles for Hawara’s
comfortable stay as well. The chargesheet stated that Jasveer Singh
provided a motorcycle to Hawara for his movement in Patiala.
But none of the
claims stood scrutiny in the court as it became clear that it was a
false case meant to cover up for the loss of face caused by Hawara’s
arrest from Patiala by a Delhi team when the local police knew
nothing about it. Bhau was brought for the final hearing from Tihar
Jail, where he was lodged. Jasveer is already out on bail.
