Ishmeet memorial runs into rough
weather
WSN Bureau
LUDHIANA: The
under-construction memorial named after late singer Ishmeet Singh
has landed in a controversy when officers of Ludhiana Improvement
Trust (LIT) stalled the work on the project, saying the building
plan has not been approved and even the government has not yet
sanctioned transfer of land to the Ishmeet Memorial Trust or
cultural department.
CM Parkash Singh
Badal had announced the memorial’s construction over 2.10 acre at
Rajguru Nagar last year and the work was initiated by the public
works department (PWD) a few days ago.
On learning
about it, a team of LIT officers comprising junior engineers (JE)
Vikram Kumar, Naveen Malhotra and Inder Pal Singh led by assistant
trust engineer Subhash Gupta went to the spot on Friday morning and
asked the PWD contractor to stop the work as the project had not
been approved by the trust. Complying with it, the contractor halted
the construction on the memorial. Dr Charan Kanwal Singh, uncle of
Ishmeet Singh and secretary of Ishmeet Memorial Trust, confirmed
this saying, “Though the state government has in principle taken
decision regarding the transfer of land, it is yet to materialize.
The PWD, which will execute the work, has got a grant of Rs 1 crore
for it, so they had just started the initial work of constructing
the boundary walls.”
CM Parkash Singh
Badal had announced the construction of a music academy in Ishmeet’s
memory, when he had attended the ‘bhog’ ceremony of the young singer
last year. Badal had asked the state government officials to
identify a site for it.
