Respect
for the Sikh turban
SAN JOSE: On Sunday the 11th of November, 2007 there was special
event at the Sikh Gurdwara, San Jose, CA. Federal Security Director,
Mr Edward Gomez and his top team members were invited at the
Gurdwara.
They followed all the Sikh protocol by partaking langar sitting
among Sangat, Matha tek, with offering. Dr. Harbans Singh Sraon,
introduced the guests and explained briefly in English, basic tenets
of Sikhism such as concept of Sangat and Pangat, selfless service to
mankind, Naam Japna, Kirat Karna and wand chhakana. Main emphasis
was laid on the Sikh appearance specifically wearing turban, being
sign of honor and respect.
Mr. Edward Gomez assured from the stage that Sikhs with turban will
be treated with utmost respect. His team members( about ten in
number), coordinated by Parkash S. Patel, security manger, came to
the stage one by one and gave the same assurance to the
congregation. If there is any problem, he gave telephone number to
call. Every employees is required to watch a video on Sikh
appearance before he/she can start working at the security check
point.

Gomez encouraged Sikhs to apply for jobs as security officers.

M. The person to apply for jobs should be U.S. Citizen, command on
English language, good character and over 18 years of age.
Dr. Sukhmander Singh also explained the importance of Turban
in Sikhism and appreciated
the efforts put by the security team. Dr. Pritpal Singh and Jaswant
Singh Hothi thanked the team for joining congragation.
Col.Kulwant Singh Sangha helped in arranging this trip. Everyone in
the security team was offered a set of books on Sikhism and Mr,
Gomeaz was honored with a Saropa by the head Granthi Bhai Mohinder
Singh Ji.
Later on Dr. Harbans Singh Sraon gave them tour of gallery
explaining Sikh principles, history and sacrifices made by the Sikhs
during Independence movement. Entire team expressed gratitude to the
Sikh community and promised to honor the Sikh turban.
