still largest group in US
WSN Network
New Delhi: For the
sixth year in a row, Indian students have emerged as the largest
group of international students in the US. According to the latest
figures released by the Institute of International Education on
Sunday, there are 83,833 Indian students in US universities. Indian
students comprise 14.4% of the total international students in the
US. Also, there has been an increase of 9.6% since the 2005-06
session.
In fact, students from four Asian countries — China, South Korea,
Japan and India — comprise 43% of all international students
enrolled in US universities. There has been a significant increase
of 20% in American students studying in India but the number is very
small at 2,115. As for the nature of courses being pursued by Indian
students in the US, 71% of them are doing Masters and PhD studies.
Graduate student enrolment grew nearly 6% from 56,397 in 2005-06 to
59,521 in 2006-07. There are over 12,500 Indian undergraduate
students pursuing bachelor’s degrees at US institutions.
Interestingly, there has been a 48% growth in the “other student”
category, from 7,380 in 2005-06 to 10,898 in 2006-07. This category
includes students and professionals applying to non-degree
programmes. Short-term courses for executives and technicians fall
within this category. Institute of International Education figures
also reveal that for 61.5% of foreign students in US, personal and
family finance is the main source of funding their education.
Last Thursday, Tom Farrell, deputy assistant secretary for academic
programme, bureau of educational and cultural affairs, briefed
newspersons about the rising trend of Indian students going to US
for higher studies.
He also said that a rising India offered excellent opportunities for
the study of contemporary development, environment and the economy.
