PAU experts to assess farmer
suicides

government has asked
Punjab
Agriculture University economists to assess farmers suicides and
suggest steps to stem the menace. The PAU economics department has
pressed into service 30 enumerators and economists to conduct a
thorough survey on farm crisis. BKU Ekta, NGO Movement Against State
Repression (MASR) and Punjab Farmers' Commission had put the
suicides at such varying figures as 40,000, 12,000 and 131,
respectively, economist and senior survey member professor Sukhpal
Singh said, "Now, our team will conduct the survey keeping in mind
three vital points - magnitude of suicide, reasons behind it
(economical, social or multiple) and impact on affected family."
