U.S drone attacks continue, 8 more killed
WSN Network

PESHAWAR: As part of a consolidated attack on the entrenched Taliban inside Pakistan areas, the US drone attacks continue despite apaprent protests of Islamabad and probably in collusion with the political bosses and the army. Even on Tuesday, a U.S. drone aircraft fired missiles near the Afghan border which killed at least eight people.

American drone attacks on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan are causing a massive humanitarian emergency in the area. And it’s a widely known truth that they do not take place without Pakistan’s sanction and covert support.

The U.S. has carried out about 40 drone air strikes since the beginning of last year, most since September, killing more than 320 people, according to a tally of reports from Pakistani security officials, district government officials and residents. There have been 16 attacks this year, with five in April.

While the attacks have evoked widespread criticism among the civilian population in Pakistan, the government has adopted a hypocritical approach to the drone attacks -- publicly claiming that they violate its sovereignty and undermine efforts to deal with militancy because they inflame public anger and bolster militant support.

But a senior U.S. lawmaker, Senator Dianne Feinstein, told a U.S. Senate hearing in February that drones were being operated and flown from an air base inside Pakistan. The Pakistani army has, of course officially denied that saying there was no permission for the strikes, nor had there even been.

The latest attack took place in the mountainous region of South Waziristan, a known Al Qaeda and Taliban hotbed. At least five militants were killed on Saturday in a separate drone attack, also in the same region.
