Rahul In Punjab,
Urges Sikhs to Vote for Congress
WSN Network
MOHALI:
As Punjab remained a major focus area for the Congress in the run up
to the last phase, polling for which will be in process when this
WSN edition hits the stands, Congress scion Rahul Gandhi appealed to
the Sikhs to vote for his party and ensure a second term for Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh, whom he called the “first Sikh” to occupy
the exalted position, and who successfully led the nation during the
recession and launched a major diplomatic offensive against
terrorism.
Apparently referring to the polls for Punjab’s nine remaining seats
out of 13, scheduled for May 13, Mr. Gandhi said: Yeh Punjab ka
election hai, yeh Dr. Singh ka election hai aur yeh Sikhon ka
election hai (this is an election for Punjab, Dr. Singh and the
Sikhs).
He addressed a series of rallies at Moga, Hoshiarpur,
Ludhiana, Amritsar etc. Rahul said the ongoing elections were
important as they would decide the clash of two ideologies —
“Shining India” versus “aam aadmi ki sarkar.” While the BJP stood
for prosperity of a select few, the Congress sought overall
development with focus on the farmers and the poor.
Punjab ka kisan, desh ki shaan (the farmer of Punjab is the
pride of India), Gandhi said, reiterating the achievements of the
UPA government in improving the lot of the farming community. He
listed implementation of the rural job guarantee scheme, waiving of
Rs. 70,000-crore farm loans and provision of midday meal for
schoolchildren as the milestones of Dr. Singh’s government.
