Sikh American
Gunned Down in Phoenix
WSN Network
Washington: A
62-year-old Sikh, Inderjit Singh Jassal, was murdered in Phoenix,
Arizona, last Monday when he was working at a 7-11 store in West
Phoenix. He was shot at by a 27-year-old black man.
Identified as Jermaine Canada, the man walked in with his two
children, aged 2 and 6. According to the surveillance video, the two
individuals had a short conversation, at the end of which Mr. Canada
pulled a concealed firearm from his shirt and fatally shot Mr.
Jassal.
The Phoenix Sikh American community is in a state of shock this week
as a motive has not been found. Nothing was stolen and there is no
confirmation that this killing was something other than a heinous
crime motivated by hate.
Sikhs in the US have been facing hate crimes, mostly under the
mistaken notion that they have any similarity with Arabs. The
community has been making many efforts to underline that the Sikhs
are a completely separate religion with the universal motto of
Sarbat Da Bhala (Welfare of all mindkind).
