be honored in Chicago
WSN Network
Chicago: Principal
Sardar Gurbux Singh Shergill (retd) is visiting Canada and US. He
will be in Chicago,
USA
also. Shergill was Principal of Khalsa College Banga, Chandigarh and
Amritsar in Punjab and was also Chairman of Punjab Education Board.
After retirement, he became Founding Chairman of Punjab Heritage
Foundation that he started with his own money. Foundation is trying
to save the rich heritage of Punjab, which is under threat of being
gulped by money hungry people.
The Foundation has
established the exact location of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Hill near
Ropar, where Maharaja deployed his troops to face off British Army.
Mazda Corporation owns the land around the hill and had dug on three
sides of it putting the flag under danger of falling. It ended up in
court and just last year they reached an agreement. Foundation also
helped rename Maharaja
Ranjit
Singh
Park in Amritsar that was named
Rani
Park (Queen
Park).
Now the Foundation is trying to build a Memorial for Baba Banda
Singh Bahadur at Chappar Chirhi where Baba defeated and killed Wazir
Khan, Suba Sirhand.
Last year, the
Foundation held a seminar about first Sikh Victory of Baba at Chapar
Chirhi, which was the beginning of Sikh Raj in state. Many prominent
historians took part in the seminar. The Foundation has the support
of many prominent historians and academicians. A separate bank
account has been set up in nearby Landran village for the memorial.
Shergill was the
Principal of Khalsa College Amritsar during dark days in Punjab
in the eighties. Many ex-students of
Khalsa
College
recall their memories of the man very often.
Khalsa
College
returned to glory days of past under his strict discipline and
guidance. Many innocent lives were turned around through his
leadership.
