Top Punjab cop courts shame in High
Court
WSN Network
CHANDIGARH: In a
more civilised world, the citizenry would have been shocked at this
but in India, the news failed to make it to even prominent place on
an inside page. The top district head of police of
Patiala, SSP S.K.
Asthana, came under the scrutiny of the
Punjab
and Haryana High Court for allegedly abusing, slapping and
threatening an old woman, Raman Kanta of
Patiala. Justice
Ranjit Singh made scathing remarks against the police officer while
taking up the anticipatory bail filed by Raman Kanta, who in her
plea accused the SSP of slapping, abusing and intimidating her.
The issue
pertains to the transfer of property in the name of her son.
The woman
alleged that her son Amrish Kumar had got a false case registered
against her in August 2008 by taking the help of his wife Monica,
who allegedly had links with some Punjab Police officers.
Kanta submitted
that she had filed a complaint against Asthana in the Punjab State
Human Rights Commission (PSHRC), after which an FIR was got
registered against her by Asthana.
The property
dispute dates back to 1991, when Kanta’s husband died and left
property in the name of her son.
This kind of
conduct is hardly unheard of in
Punjab. “After
17 years of the incident, the issue has been raked up, that too when
the complaint against the police is made before the Human Rights
Commission as well as through a petition before this court. The FIR
seems to be a reaction to this approach made by petitioners. The
interim anticipatory bail granted to Raman Kanta is made absolute,”
Justice Singh ruled.
Expressing shock
over the issue, Justice Randhawa rubbished certain allegations
levelled by the son against his mother on the alleged provocation of
his wife.
