Sahaita lends helping hand to
promote health in North India

FREMONT:
Living true to its name, Sahaita organized eight medical camps all
over Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh with a team of medical
professionals from US and Canada for three weeks from 4 October to
22 October rendering much needed health care and free medicines.
The high profile
list of the team included Dr. Arthur Swislocki who is Chief of
Internal Medicine at Dept of Veterans affairs clinic in
Martinez, his
wife Ann, Dr. Wafa Samara, Dr. Joy Meier, Dr. Carol Bowden, JJ
Nicholas (Sports medicine) Deloris Mensini R.N., Upkaar Mangat R.N.
and her husband Lachman Mangat. Members from Canada included Dr.
Upninderjit Singh (Dr. Jogi) along with Jaspal Singh, Paramjit
Sanghera, Mr and Mrs Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal, Mr and Mrs.MP Singh, Mr
and Mrs Tiwana, Chamkaur Singh and Mr and Mrs. Resham Singh. Both
Sahaita teams worked with team of Sahaita India under leadership of
Dr.Rajinder Singh (Ophthalmologist).
Sahaita teams
held 8 medical camps of which6 were full medical and eye camps. The
six camps at Kishan Garh Channa, Hassanpur, Mujara, Jhabelwali, Burj
Dunne ki and Padialla in Punjab, one at Chanaur, Dist Kangra in
Himachal Pradesh and the last camp was organized at Adarsh public
school in Karnal, Haryana.
Dealing with an
average of more than 700 patients in a day, the medical team was
able to build data relating to the cause of day to day diseases, the
primary ones being diabetes and hypertension. It was observed that
the illnesses were accentuated by poverty and illiteracy.
JJ Nicholas who
was fondly called, Dr. JJ Singh, he was busy all day. Over 350
patients were identified for free Intra ocular Lens implant by Phaco-
emulsification technique at Dr. Rajinder’s clinic in
Ludhiana.
Not
to lag behind to have a taste of
India, the
visiting doctors celebrated Dusherra and gifted Basketball/Soccer
Balls, Shirts /pants, Clothes, Bennie babies and other stuffed toys
beside Candy, which they had carried with them from
USA.
For some of them it was first toy of their life and were jumping up
and down and giving hugs all around.
The hard work of
the doctors was made enjoyable by the typical Punjabi hospitality
and the medics did made full use of the opportunity to have a
glimpse of Sikh culture and way of life by visiting Gurdwaras,
including Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib where they were accorded a formal
welcome. Another highlight was a visit to Dabar Sahib Amritsar and
the Tibetan Cultural Centre at Mcleodganj.
