WSN Bureau

FREMONT:  Living true to its name, Sahaita organized eight medical camps all over Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh with a team of medical professionals from US and Canada for three weeks from 4 October to 22 October rendering much needed health care and free medicines.

The high profile list of the team included Dr. Arthur Swislocki who is Chief of Internal Medicine at Dept of Veterans affairs clinic in Martinez, his wife Ann, Dr. Wafa Samara, Dr. Joy Meier, Dr. Carol Bowden, JJ Nicholas (Sports medicine) Deloris Mensini R.N., Upkaar Mangat R.N. and her husband Lachman Mangat. Members from Canada included Dr. Upninderjit Singh (Dr. Jogi) along with Jaspal Singh, Paramjit Sanghera, Mr and Mrs Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal, Mr and Mrs.MP Singh, Mr and Mrs Tiwana, Chamkaur Singh and Mr and Mrs. Resham Singh. Both Sahaita teams  worked with team of Sahaita India under leadership of Dr.Rajinder Singh (Ophthalmologist).

Sahaita teams held 8 medical camps of which6 were full medical and eye camps. The six camps at Kishan Garh Channa, Hassanpur, Mujara, Jhabelwali, Burj Dunne ki and Padialla in Punjab, one at Chanaur, Dist Kangra in Himachal Pradesh and the last camp was organized at Adarsh public school in Karnal, Haryana.

Dealing with an average of more than 700 patients in a day, the medical team was able to build data relating to the cause of day to day diseases, the primary ones being diabetes and hypertension. It was observed that the illnesses were accentuated by poverty and illiteracy.

JJ Nicholas who was fondly called, Dr. JJ Singh, he was busy all day. Over 350 patients were identified for free Intra ocular Lens implant by Phaco- emulsification technique at Dr. Rajinder’s clinic in Ludhiana.

Not to lag behind to have a taste of India, the visiting doctors celebrated Dusherra and gifted Basketball/Soccer Balls, Shirts /pants, Clothes, Bennie babies and other stuffed toys beside Candy, which they had carried with them from USA. For some of them it was first toy of their life and were jumping up and down and giving hugs all around.

The hard work of the doctors was made enjoyable by the typical Punjabi hospitality and the medics did made full use of the opportunity to have a glimpse of Sikh culture and way of life by visiting Gurdwaras, including Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib where they were accorded a formal welcome. Another highlight was a visit to Dabar Sahib Amritsar and the Tibetan Cultural Centre at Mcleodganj.
