Want to register Sikh marriage? Pak offers you
the chance
WSN Bureau
ISLAMABAD/AMRITSAR: Pakistan seems to be all ready for enacting the
separate law for registering Sikh marriages, a step which will
directly be a boost for demands for a similar law in India. A
special marriage legislation for the Sikh community is to be
introduced in Pakistan soon, caretaker Minister for Law and Justice
Afzal Haider has said.
The contemplated law would be the first such legislation anywhere in
the world, including India where Sikh community marriages are
solemnized under Hindu marriages act, much to the chagrin of the
Sikhs who have been demanding a separate law.
The proposed Sikh Marriages Ordinance 2007 was in final stage of
processing and would be promulgated soon.
A delegation from India led by DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna
recently visited Pakistan alongwith some experts to help in drafting
the Ordinace.
Now, what may further create a problem for the Indian government is
the provision that the Sikhs from any part of the world could come
to Pakistan to solemnize marriage and avail of the facility of
registration.
Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta and Nankana Sahib have
been specified under the ordinance for solemnizing Sikh marriages.
The number of these places is likely to be increased and Punja Sahib
is being seen as another likely addition.
