Now, listen to live kirtan from Harmandar Sahib, read its meaning too

AMRITSAR: Millions of people across the world who watch `kirtan' from Harmandar Sahib on their TV sets will soon be able to simultaneously understand the `shabads' being recited in both Punjabi and English.

The SGPC is holding trials of the software for the proposed service, which is already in use in gurdwaras abroad.

Yet another plan of the SGPC to telecast the `kirtan' live on its official website, www.sgpc.net, reportedly faces resistance from PTC channel, which has been given exclusive rights for the direct telecast of `kirtan' from Harmandar Sahib every morning and evening.

It is widely known that PTC is playing proxy for the Akali Dal and is under the infleunce of Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal. Nevertheless, the SGPC is actively pursuing its plan to make `kirtan' available on FM radio. Official sources said the proposal was being taken up with Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni.

SGPC secretary Dilmegh Singh said the committee had arranged an AC Volvo bus free of cost for pilgrims.

The bus will ply between the Rajasansi international airport and Harmandar Sahib.

It will have an LCD to impart information regarding Harmandar Sahib during the 15-km run.

Two touch screens have been put up in Guru Arjan Dev Niwas and Mata Ganga Ji Serai to provide religious information to pilgrims in Punjabi, Hindi and English.

Two freezing machines have been installed at the hitech `langar' hall at Harmandar Sahib to store milk, apart from two automatic cleaning machines.

The SGPC has also hired the services of Guru Nanak Dev University experts for the landscaping of an unutilised chunk of land between `langar' hall and Diwan Manji Sahib Hall in the Harmandar Sahib complex.

With an aim of modernising its task force, the SGPC has recruited 50 baptised Sikhs with a minimum qualification of 10+2 and a minimum height of 5'-8".

The batch is being sent to the Punjab Police training centre in Jehan Kehlan.

The SGPC has decided to set up another `serai' at a cost of Rs 5.80 crore over 1,600 sq ft of land it had recently cleared of encroachment. It is also planning to arrange a biometric machine to mark the attendance of its employees.
