Amritsar: While almost all of us
use a comb to do up our hair, a man in Amritsar has made it his
musical instrument. Sohan Bajala, 32, an Amritsar tailor, has a
passion for music and this has driven him to use his comb to
generate various musical sounds.
A resident of Fategarh Churian, which is nearly 30 kilometers from
Amritsar, Bajala has given many stage performances with his comb. An
admirer of playback singer Mohammad Rafi, Bajala was once listening
to Rafi's song on radio, when he picked up his comb and started
using it as a mouth organ.
"I practiced continuously for few hours and soon I was producing
musical tunes of Rafi's songs with the comb," he said. Bajala claims
that he can play many tunes on his self-invented polythene-wrapped
comb.
Bajala has been practicing this art religiously every morning for
many years. "Tailoring is my profession, but music is my passion. It
is food for my soul," says Bajala.
Although, Bajala has not taken any professional training, he has
taken part in many contests, including the talent-hunt "Indian
Idol". "Many children in rural areas are gifted with different
talents. But due to lack of knowledge, most of them are unable to
explore or expose their talent to their best," Bajala lamented.
