Soft Hurriyat seems ready for face saving solution
WSN Network

SRINAGAR: Notwithstanding some of the politically correct statements emerging from the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference in Kashmir, it seems sections of the Kashmiri battle front are now ready to make peace with the Indian establishment.

In a statement pregnant with meaning, the chairman of the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, while addressing a Friday Congregation at the Jamia Masjid here, said dialogue holds the key to the resolution of Kashmir issue and it can be "resolved in a phased manner, provided New Delhi shows consistency, seriousness and sincerity."

"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is saying one thing at one time and another thing at another time," he said, and asked New Delhi to accept the ground realities and take necessary steps to restore confidence of the people of Kashmir in the institution of dialogue.

Adding that the Prime Minister and Home Minister P. Chidambaram's latest statements on Kashmir "are encouraging", he said, "We have always supported result-oriented...dialogue."

Apparently referring to ruling the National Conference and opposition PDP, the Hurriyat leader said, "Those who claim to be the sympathisers of Kashmiris and are serious in the solution of the Kashmir issue should come forward and join our efforts."

"Srinagar, New Delhi, Islamabad and Muzaffarabad are the four pillars of the table and their involvement is a must for the success of the dialogue," Mirwaiz said.

Suggesting confidence building measures, the Hurriyat chairman said: "We have already proposed a five-point formula which would help to create a conducive atmosphere for dialogue. The five-point formula includes step wise demilitarisation, revocation of armed forces special powers act, free movement along the traditional cross-border roads."
