CHANDIGARH:
Eminent educationist Dr T.R. Sharma, known for his near saintly
ways, spartan life style, clear approach and a no-nonsense attitude
towards administration of the education domain, is no more. Dr.
Sharma, who authored nearly 50 books on education and has been
participating in the country's education policy making, died at his
hometown Patiala at the age of 86.
He was bedridden
for over a year now, but will be forever remembered for zealous
opposition to privatization of school education and believed that
the child could be developed well in his or her own mother tongue.
In recent years,
he, along with his close friend and scholar Prof Pritam Singh, had
emerged as the strongest votaries for promoting Punjabi language
teaching. Prof Pritam Singh died only recently.
Dr Sharma, along
with other academicians, also fought for implementation of the
Kothari Commission recommendations that mainly proposed common
schools for children from all kinds of economic backgrounds, whether
rich or poor.
He has to his
credit the Punjabi translation of 'The History of Indian Education'
by Naik and Narula.
His academic
subject has mainly been 'Research Methodology on Education'. Punjab
Education Minister Dr Upinderjit Kaur has condoled Dr Sharma's
demise, stating that the departed academician was a prolific writer
as well. "In the death of Dr T.R. Sharma, Punjab as well as the
literary world has lost a distinguished writer and critic, whose
writings gave a new identity in the field of education and a social
purpose," the minister said.
