AMRITSAR: An
ugly row has broken out in Punjab and Haryana after SGPC president
Avtar Singh Makkar accused Jagdish Singh Jhinda, president of the
Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (ad hoc), of displaying a
few fake objects by claiming that these were related to Guru Gobind
Singh. The display was during a Shukrana Yatra led by Jhinda. Jhinda
claims the objects were genuine.
On Tuesday, Jhinda landed up at the
SGPC office, scores of supporters in tow, and dared Avtar Singh
Makkar to prove his allegation or resign. Hundreds joined the
protest. Jhinda has even threatened to move the Punjab and Haryana
High Court if Makkar did not comply with the ultimatum. He also gave
a memorandum to the Akal Takht and demanded action against Makkar.
Handing over a memorandum to SGPC member Rajinder Singh Mehta
outside the committee office, Jhinda said, “Makkar had alleged that
the items related to Guru Gobind Singh, displayed during the yatra,
are fake. We have brought these items, including the horse, which is
a descendant of the one used by the Guru.” “Makkar must prove his
allegation or resign by tomorrow. Otherwise, we will move the High
Court against him,” he said.
Meanwhile, a
scuffle took place between SGPC employees and Haryana Sikhs outside
the committee office. A heavy police posse in plain clothes was
deployed there to prevent any untoward incident.
