Indian babus take Consultancy route
WSN Network
NEW DELHI: This
is a trend clearly exported from the United States
to India. First it was top Indian bureaucrat and retired cabinet
secretary Naresh Chandra who took the 'Consultant' route and is
currently on the board of about 20 companies, minting money. It is
said that Chandra got the idea of becoming a consultant during his
stint as India's ambassador in the United States.
Now, many
retired and even serving officers are becoming consultants to MNCs
or major Indian companies and earning crores of rupees. To join
lobbying firms after quitting service is a common practice among US
Congressmen and top retired officers. Robert Blackwill, former US
ambassador to India, now heads the lobbying firm Barbour Griffith &
Rogers, LLC and others. Blackwill recently wrote a letter to Andhra
Pradesh chief minister Y.S.R. Reddy requesting him to appoint a
high-power committee to look into the raids conducted on Amway.
Amway India is a subsidiary of the US-based Amway Corporation.
Following a complaint, the state CID had raided the offices of Amway
in several Andhra cities. A case was registered against the company
for allegedly violating the provisions of the Chit and Prize Money
Act. Amway has contested the charge at the high court. The matter is
awaiting disposal, and YSR is yet to respond to Blackwill's request.
