Now, sword-waving Ravan Sena
Balmikis wreak mayhem in Punjab
WSN Network
Kapurthala:
Close on the heels of the unprecendeted bloodshed, violence and
mayhem in
Punjab
by followers of Ravidasia dera came another bout of violence as
Valmiki mobs held Kapurthala to ransom on June 8, protesting over
what they called “derogatory” remarks against Bhagwan Balmik in a
school text book.
Protesters
wielding swords, sticks and other lethal weapons took to the streets
and forced down shutters, bullying panicked shopkeepers and sending
the message that
Punjab's
Akali Dal led government could not guarantee safety of the people
and was unable to control a bunch of hooligans.
People said the
mobs were encouraged to indulge in hooliganism because of the Badals'
propensity to announce virtual amnesty for those who shed blood and
looted and burnt public and private property in the riots that
followed the attack on a dalit leader in
Vienna.
The uproar
related to the content of ‘Parag’,a class 7 storybook in Hindi
taught at the
Kapurthala
Sacred Heart High School.
Local scheduled
caste organisations had formed an action committee, the Ravan Sena,on
learning of the content of ‘Parag’and lodged a complaint with the
administration on May 23, demanding a ban.
