Doyen of civil rights, Dr. Yashpal
Chibbar passes away

NEW DELHI:
While we observe the call for dignity and justice for all of us, a
doyen of civil rights in India and founder of the civil rights
organisation-Peoples Union for Civil Liberties, which has played a
key role for the last many decades, Dr. Yashpal Chhibbar expired
this morning after a brief illness.
National
president of the PUCL, K. G. Kannabiran condoled his death saying,
"I am deeply shocked to hear of the said demise of my dear friend
and colleague in the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties."
Dr. Chhibbar, a
Professor in Economics in Delhi
University, was a founding member of the Peoples Union for Civil
Liberties and its General Secretary for over two decades. He was a
follower of Jaya Prakash Narayan. From 1978 onwards Dr. Chhibbar
managed the National Office of Peoples Union for Civil Liberties
located in his residence and edited the PUCL Bulletin.
He was
responsible for advising State Units, building the archive of the
Peoples Union for Civil Liberties and organizing its Annual Lecture
Series. With his demise, the civil liberties movement in India has lost a
committed leader and a campaigner of Human Rights.
