Union City Celebrates Golden jubilee Interfaith Festival
WSN Network

UNION CITY: The highly diverse population of Union City, California experienced a unique feeling on Saturday, June 27, 2009. Residents of different faiths, beliefs and creeds sat together all day long to learn about their neighbors’ religious practices and invocations. Union City involved its residents to celebrate Golden anniversary of the establishment of the City Beautiful.  Kennedy Park remained cheerful during Interfaith Festival from 10 am to 6 pm. Songs, dances, prayers and speeches kept the residents engaged throughout the day.  Churches, Gurdwaras, Temples, Mosques all participated in the all day long events. Residents’ curiosity was obvious from their enthusiasm to know different paths to spirituality in their neighborhood.

Sikhs’ presence in Kennedy Park was overwhelming and quite prominent. Sikh prayer (Ardas) and musical rendering (Kirtan) was performed in Punjabi. Speeches were made to explain Sikh symbolism and marks of invocations. Sikh Youth felt proud to exhibit their (martial art) Gatka skills. Their coach Jaspreet Singh Lavla directed the show. The event attracted attentions of the entire audience. Kirtan was performed by Professor Dalbir Singh.  Bibi Sarbjit Kaur Cheema conducted the events in an appreciable manner. Fremont Gurdwara served Langar to members of all denominations.

Harvinder Singh, a University student delivered keynote speech. Clad in the traditional Khalsa dress with three foot sword,  he impressed the audience with his imposing look. Dr. Amrik Singh from Sacramento spoke on Guru Granth Sahib’s spiritual leadership of Sikhs after the 10th Sikh Guru.  It was made clear that differences of practice should in no way be a hindrance in the spiritual path. The Creator pervades in His diverse creation, therefore, nothing is separate from Him. The only path to peace is to enshrine His unseen presence in our hearts. We may follow different paths, but our destination is the same.

Union City Sikh leaders Jaswinder Singh Jandi, Nirmal Singh Bath, Saroop Singh Jhajj, Gurnam Singh, Makhan Singh Bains, Bhai Joginder Singh, Karnail Singh Khalsa, Bhai Rajinder Singh, Darshan Singh (Taksal) Harvinder Singh , Bhai Rai Singh ex Head Granthi Fremont Gurdwara, Bhai Avtar Singh Missionary, Malkit Singh Subedar  participated and helped in arrangement and food service.
