LAHORE/RUP
NAGAR: At a time when the Pakistan Evacuee Trust Property Board
(PETPB) has assured the Sikh community through American Gurdwara
Prabadhak Committee co-ordinator Pritpal Singh that it will restore
the tomb of Maharaj Ranjit Singh, the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Bagh at
Rupnagar lay neglected on the 170th death anniversary of the great
Singh king.
The Bagh is
situated near the place where a historic meeting was held between
the Maharaja and the then Governor General, Lord William Bentick, in
1831 to settle boundary issues.
Punjab Chief
Minister Parkash Singh Badal had inaugurated the Bagh in 1997 during
a state-level function to mark the death anniversary of the Maharaja
and a War Memorial was also constructed there depicting the history
of Sikh Misls. Few years back, the district administration started
making efforts to give it a new look under a project for developing
Rupnagar as a tourist destination and Rs 1 crore was spent to
renovate and beautify the Bagh and its surroundings. But the Bagh
now lies in a shambles. Tall grass covers the whole area and the
fountains have been non-functional after the inauguration due to the
absence of electricity connection. Now, it is used as a venue for
protest demonstrations and rallies.
Meanwhile,
Pritpal Singh of AGPC has said hsi forum will arrange for technical
expertise for restoration and conservation of Maharaja Ranjit
Singh's tomb. He said he will soon submit a report in this context
to the PETPB.
