Sikhs throng Maryland Keertan Samagam
S. S. Mankoo

MARYLAND: The Annual Maryland Akhand Keertan Samagam was attended by more than 1500 Gursikhs from various states of Northern America, Canada, UK, and India. This was the twelfth year of the Samagam that started in 1998 and has traditionally been held on the second weekend of March every year.

The Samagam started with the first program on the evening of Friday, March 13, 2009, at Gurdeep Singh's residence in Boyds, Maryland. This was followed by an Amrit Vela session at Gurdeep Singh's residence on Saturday morning.. The morning Keertan Diwan and the evening Rehan Sabahi was held at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Foundation of America (GNFA), Silver Spring, Maryland. The evening Rehan Sabahi was attended by an estimated sangat of more than 1500.

This year's samagam was attended by Keertaniyas from Canada, India, and various states of USA. The main Keertaniyas were Bibi Tarvinder Kaur Jee (Seattle, Washington), Bhai Harpreet Singh Jee (Toronto, Canada), Bhai Telvinder Singh Jee (Toronto, Canada), Bhai Harpinder Singh Jee (Toronto, Canada), Bhai Deepinder Singh Jee (Toronto, Canada), Bibi Ravinder Kaur Jee (Toronto, Canada), Bhai Kudrat Singh Jee (6 year old from Toronto, Canada), Bhai Gurdeep Singh Jee (Toronto, Canada), Bhai Jagjit Singh Jee (New York),  Bhai Didaar Singh Jee (New York), Bhai Gurraj Singh Jee (Texas), Bhai Jashon Singh Jee (New York), and Bhai Jagmohan Singh Jee (Hazuri Raagi, GNFA, Maryland). Sangat came from various states including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Delaware, Massachussetts, Michigan, Texas, Ohio, and California.

The Samagam was broadcast by akj.org and passionfortruthtv.com and was watched online by hundreds around the globe. It was a memorable experience seeing so many Gursikh youth wearing the traditional Gursikh Baanaa (dress) and reciting Waheguru's Naam throughout the night.

There was hardly any room to sit as the hall was packed and sangat was trying to squeeze in wherever they could find space to sit and enjoy the melodious Keertan. Most of the sangat sat through the whole night and the main hall was still packed when the program ended at 5.00 am. The popularity of the Samagam has been constantly increasing and so has the sangat.
