Senior Citizens

FREMONT:
Rising to the occasion, leaders and volunteers of Gurdwara Fremont
organised logistic and material assistance for senior citizens hit
hard by the recent recessionary trend in the economy.
Fremont Gurdwara displayed its leadership and care for the
community by organizing a social services fair for its seniors.
Included in the event were booths on receiving government aid, tax
preparation, receiving medical benefits, using transportation, legal
assistance, and more on health issues as well as mental well being.
Although most of the booths were set up and run by Fremont Gurdwara,
a few other organizations were on hand including the
Cash Assistance
Program for Immigrants (CAPI), Free tax preparation, AC Transist,
Medicare and Medical, social security, family abuse and dispute and
the Fremont Family Resource Center.
Two weeks back
the Freemont Gurdwara Sahib donated 600 diabetes machines to seniors
and Walgreens also helped out when its employees gave out coupons
for medicine to fellow Sikhs in need.
Thanks to the dozens of volunteers helping out at the 20
booths, more than 300 senior citizens benefited. 88 year old Karam
Singh, the oldest Sikh at the event,, Jaswant Kaur, another elder
Sikh of 80 years, and Sardar Hardev Singh at the age of 80 who still
works full time at a gas station was awarded for their good health
and seniority.
Kashmir S Shahi, Nirpal Singh, Jotpreet S Shahi, Bhai Pal
Singh of Singh Tax Service, and many other volunteers ably assisted
the seniors to make the program a success. President of Gurdwara
Sahib Fremont, Harjot Singh Khalsa promised to organize a similar
program in the near future.
